Explore The Natural Wonders Of The Area
Discover all the unspoiled scenic splendor of the island of Puerto Rico during your stay at El Conquistador. Enjoy a long hike surrounded by the beauty of El Yunque National RainForest, explore the rich history of Old San Juan and El Morro Fort, or take a kayaking excursion through the famous glowing bioluminescent bay. Delight in all the thrilling marvels that make Puerto Rico a unique and memorable destination, including:
  • The El Yunque National RainForest, Named after the benevolent Indian spirit Yuquiyu, El Yunque is the only rainforest in the US National Forest System. Discover the natural wonder of El Yunque as you hike along the many trails, take a dip in one of the waterfall pools, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. El Yunque features an extensive network of hiking trails, picnic facilities, and the 'El Portal' exhibit hall showcasing exhibitions relevant to the area. For more information or to schedule a tour contact our Tour & Travel Desk at 787.863.1000.
  • The Bioluminescent Bay, Imagine the blackness of the sea on a moonless night. Now watch it sparkle with the darting lights of a million fireflies. Nature lovers will not want to miss the phenomenal experience of kayaking through a tropical phosphorescent bay! Trip Advisors members preferred Laguna Grande in the Cabezas Nature Reserve in Fajardo, the East region of Puerto Rico.
  • Las Cabezas de San Juan Lighthouse, Officially lit on May 2, 1882, it has been operating uninterrupted to this day. Inside you’ll find various exhibits related to the lighthouse’s history and surrounding wildlife, as well as an elaborate cast-iron staircase that ascends to the central lantern. The observation deck offers breathtaking views as trade winds gently blow by. Click here to watch a clip of Las Cabezas Light House
  • El Morro  Fort and Fort San Cristóbal, officially known as Fuerte San Felipe del Morro, overlooks the entrance to San Juan Bay. Visit hidden passages, gaze over the 60-foot tall walls at the ocean, and troll on the lawns where soldiers once marched. The fort can be explored everyday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. El Morro is a National Historic Site in the U. S. National Park Service. Fort San Cristóbal stands guard at what was the eastern gate to the walled city of Old San Juan. Covering 27 acres, this is the largest fort built by the Spanish in the New World and is the ‘sister fort’ to El Morro. The fort is open to the public daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Everything from the vast fermentation vats to the high-speed bottling machinery is at work and on display. A trolley takes you to the Bacardi family museum, where a history of the product and landmarks in its development are seen. Here you can sample the world-famous rum and buy souvenirs and Bacardi products at the gift shop.
  • Parque de Bombas – located at the Plaza Las Delicias in the municipality of Ponce, it originally served as the main exhibit pavilion for an agricultural trade fair but was soon thereafter commissioned to house the firefighting corps for the southern region of the island – a function it fulfilled for more than a century. • Arecibo Observatory (Arecibo Radio Telescope ) Located in Arecibo is the Arecibo  Radio Telescope, the largest of its kind and one of the most important research facilities on the face of the earth. The huge dish (dozens of football fields could fit inside its sinkhole) is forever aimed at the sky, tuned to detect the slightest sounds emitted by the farthest stars. This is the  place where planets outside our solar system were discovered and is the home base for NASA's SETI, the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence –[Fun Fact – a portion of Jodie Fosters movie Contact was filmed here].  The Arecibo Observatory is open Wednesday to Friday from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM and Saturday, Sunday and most holidays from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Click Here to watch a video.
  • Camuy River Cave Park,  Explore all that Puerto Rico has to offer as you venture out to the Camuy River Cave Park in Camuy and discover the underground cave system. There are only two other places in the world where you will find a cave system as massive or dramatic as the Río Camuy Cave Park - and neither of them has a tropical underground river thundering through it! The park is normally open Wednesday through Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The last tour departs at 3:30 p.m., or when the park reaches its daily capacity. Call to confirm schedule and space availability (787) 898-3100. Click Here to watch a video.
